Endometriosis and Exercise
As Endometriosis Awareness Month continues……. let's discuss how exercise may help benefit endometriosis. First of all, exercise is a wonderful tool for physical health and aiding chronic disease BUT for some people suffering from endometriosis, it's extremely difficult to partake in exercise so it may not be for everyone. But how might it help?
1. Exercise helps release endorphins which can provide an analgesic response and decrease pain.
2. Exercise can reduce inflammation which is one of the root causes of endometriosis.
3. Exercise can help aid digestion issues like constipation and diarrhoea which often correlates with endometriosis pain.
4. Endometriosis sufferers have a higher risk of having depression or anxiety so exercise can improve mood and increase mindfulness.
5. Fatigue is a common side effect of endometriosis but exercise gives a boost of energy with a bunch of endorphins!
In Chinese Medicine, Endometriosis is caused by a stagnation of Qi and Blood. Gentle exercises like walking, yoga and tai chi move stagnant Liver Qi to remove tension, anxiety, pain and distension and create balance.
But what exercises should you do?
Low impact exercise like walking, swimming or biking (if tolerated) are ideal for approximately 30 minutes a day.
Strengthening the lower back and core with pilates is considered helpful but make sure you have a trainer who is well versed in endo!
Stretching/ relaxation exercises like yoga and Tai Chi are perfect to aid mental and physical health and stretch pelvic muscles.
Are you suffering from endo? Adding some movement into your routine may help!
